Trump Tells Karoline Leavitt ‘You’re Doing a Terrible Job’ While Complaining About Bad Publicity
Donald Trump called out Karoline Leavitt while complaining about bad publicity to his press corps, suggesting the White House press secretary is “doing a terrible job.”
The president took a swipe at Leavitt at a press conference in the Oval Office on Tuesday, where he lamented the state of the media and how he was portrayed.
“We have to fix our media,” Trump said. “As you know, the circulation of the New York Times has decreased greatly. The Washington Post is almost extinct.”
After criticizing legacy newspapers as “dishonest,” Trump declared that “people don’t believe the media,” citing as evidence coverage of the 2024 presidential race that suggested he was in poor shape before re-election.
“I got 93% bad publicity,” he said. “Some say 97, but between 93 and 97; maybe Karoline is doing a bad job, I don’t know.”
“He is my representative,” he continued. “You’re doing a terrible job. Should we keep him? I think we’ll keep him.”
A faint laugh rose in the room in response to the strange comment; This suggested that the president was probably playfully joking with his press secretary.
“From ’93 to ’97, when you get bad press, bad press, and you win by a huge margin, do you know what that means? People don’t believe the press,” he added. “And when people don’t believe the press, that’s a very bad thing for our country.”
Trump then took aim at the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, which he said had “a lot of bad news.” Watch Trump’s remarks below.
Trump’s criticism came a day after Leavitt’s speech About ABC, CBS, and NBC’s coverage of the Sheridan Gorman case. So the White House press secretary touched on the case during a briefing with the press corps on Monday, saying it was “despicable” that there weren’t more stories about the killing of Gorman, an 18-year-old college freshman who was allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant in Chicago earlier this month.
