Trump threatens Starmer with ‘big tariff’ over tech tax, Telegraph reports

US President Donald Trump said he would impose tariffs on the UK if Prime Minister Keir Starmer does not reduce the digital services tax, The Telegraph reported on Friday, citing an interview with the president.

Trump tells The Telegraph he will “put a huge tariff on the US”It will be K” unless the US reduces its tax, which is perceived to unfairly target tech companies.

The UK introduced a 2% digital services tax in 2020, a move criticized by Trump and his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden. The digital services tax targets companies such as Apple, Alphabet’s Google and Meta.

“I don’t like them targeting American companies, because you’re basically talking about our great American companies and the best companies in the world,” Trump said.

“We’ve been looking into this and we could easily cover that by putting a big tariff on the UK. So they better be careful. If they don’t reduce the duty, we’re probably going to put a big tariff on the UK,” he added.
Trump’s comments come ahead of Britain’s King Charles’ visit to the United States next week.
