Trump threatens to cut funds if ‘communist’ Mamdani wins mayoral election | Donald Trump
On the eve of New York’s closely watched mayoral election, President Donald Trump issued a threat to his voters: Stop Zohran Mamdani or pay.
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the New York Mayoral Election, it is unlikely that I will contribute Federal Funds beyond the required minimum towards my beloved first home,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “As president, I don’t want to send good money after bad money.”
Trump’s comments echo those that aired during his appearance on CBS’ 60 Minutes on Sunday: “It’s going to be hard for me as president to give a lot of money to New York, because if you have a communist running New York, all you’re going to do is waste the money you’re sending there.”
The president does not directly determine how much money any city receives from the federal government; Appropriations are a constitutional function of Congress. Control over how money is spent or retained in seizure actions; banned under federal law – has become a point of increasing legal wrangling.
The Trump administration is on track to eliminate this threat even before the votes are counted. The White House began wrangling the state over New York’s plan to implement congestion pricing for car traffic earlier this year; Trump revisited this in a separate Truth Social post Monday evening. In Trump’s post, the vote for Mamdani’s other candidate, Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa, was described as a “vote for Mamdani” and it was mentioned that the independent candidate, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, was preferred.
“I would rather see a Democrat WIN with a Record of Success than a Communist with no experience and a record of COMPLETE FAILURE,” Trump wrote.
Cuomo, who has been a lifelong Democrat but is running as an independent in this year’s mayoral race to avoid the Democratic primary. repeated This is the line the president used while speaking on 77WABC radio after the post.

Later Monday, Mamdani publicly responded to Trump’s remarks at a campaign event in Astoria, Queens, saying she had known “for months” that Trump would support Cuomo.
