The meeting will be the first meeting between Trump and Mamdani since the Democratic socialist’s victory in the New York City mayoral race earlier this month. Mamdani, a Queens state assemblywoman known for her progressive platform, will take office in January to growing anticipation from political and business leaders alike.

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani proposed measures such as free bus service, municipally owned grocery stores and a rent freeze.

Some of his more ambitious ideas shook Wall Street and attracted some of his harshest critics. The conflict underscores the widening gap between progressive visions for the city and the financial sector that has long powered it.

Earlier this month, Mamdani said he was ready to meet with JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and other financial giants as he prepares for a new era of progressive leadership at Wall Street Town Hall.

Dimon has previously said he would support Mamdani if he wins the seat.

After the victory, billionaire Bill Ackman wrote to X that Mamdani “should tell me what I can do” if she could help.

The Pershing Square chief had previously promised Mamdani to provide funding if an alternative candidate emerged. He also warned that Mamdani’s fiscal plan “will destroy jobs and cause businesses and wealthy taxpayers to leave New York.”

It remains to be seen whether Mamdani’s outreach to Trump and Wall Street will ease tensions or deepen divisions, but few doubt that his arrival at City Hall marks the beginning of a new political chapter for New York.
