West Bengal CEO flags off poll tram ahead of Assembly race

Kolkata: An Election Trolley car with posters promoting the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections was inaugurated by the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Kumar Agarwal in Kolkata on Friday.

Elections in the state will be held in two stages on April 23 and April 29, and the counting of votes in both stages is planned to be held on May 4.

The Election Commission has partnered with popular animated character ‘Chhota Bheem’ to launch a campaign aimed at increasing voter awareness ahead of the Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters, CEO Agarwal said that a report has been received from the District Officer (DO) regarding the recent violence in Basanti.

He also stated that the police have filed a special case along with other legal departments regarding the attack and the investigation is currently ongoing.


“We have received a report from the DO and the police have filed a special case for assault and other sections of law and an investigation is ongoing,” he told reporters.
Violence broke out in Basanti assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district during BJP candidate Bikash Sardar’s campaign near Basanti Bazaar. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has suspended Inspector-in-Charge of Basanti Police Station Avijit Paul from duty with immediate effect.

The suspension comes following a violent incident in Basanti Bazar area under Basanti Police Station, Baruipur Police District, on March 26, which resulted in injuries to many people, including police personnel.

“It was observed that Inspector Avijit Paul of I/C Basanti PS did not make adequate police arrangements despite having prior knowledge of the public program of the two political parties. Moreover, CAPF was made available for the last few days. Despite this, he did not request CAPF for maintenance of law and order. This reflects serious negligence and dereliction of duty on his part,” the ECI said in an order. he said.
