President Donald Trump held his last meeting with Chinese President Xi after the two leaders had a bilateral tea at the Zhongnanhai compound, heralding a major victory at one of the main focal points of the high-stakes summit.
“This was an incredible visit,” Trump told reporters. “I think it has a lot of benefits, and we’ve had great trade deals. It’s great for both countries.”
The announcement comes in the backdrop of a years-long tariff dispute between the US and China; While Trump has argued that aggressive tariffs are needed to force fairer trading conditions, Beijing has repeatedly backed down. Although it is not clear what agreements were reached, it was shared that China agreed to order 200 Boeing jets.

A key part of Trump’s “America First” agenda focused on leveling the global trade playing field by holding other countries accountable for trade deficits. One of his first moves after returning to office was to impose “Liberation Day” tariffs in April 2025, designed to generate new revenue while also serving as leverage in trade negotiations.

Tariffs have been at the center of Trump’s China strategy since his first term, when he imposed duties on Chinese imports and Beijing retaliated with tariffs of its own. The struggle remains one of the defining pressure points in the relationship between the world’s two largest economies.
Trump’s first visit in 2017 generated more than $250 billion in announced trade agreements and cooperation commitments, but that did not prevent trade relations from deteriorating in 2018.
