President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he would be “honored” to meet Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
The US president said he would meet with the Iranian leader if an agreement is reached to end the US-Iran war, which is in its fourth month. Trump was taking questions from journalists in the Oval Office after making a statement about coal.
“If we make an agreement, it is possible to meet,” he said. “I wouldn’t mind that.”
After his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed on the first day of the war, Khamenei was elected Iran’s religious leader.
Trump said he expected Khamenei to be a “professional” even though US-Israeli strikes killed his father and other members of his family.
“He actually has a very good reputation in some circles,” Trump said.
Recent mixed messages from negotiations to end the war have upset global markets and caused a crisis. oil and rising gasoline prices. Iran has kept the Strait of Hormuz, a critical conduit that carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil, largely closed since the start of the war.
Gas prices averaged $4.24 per gallon nationwide on Thursday. AAA.
A tenuous ceasefire in the conflict has been in place for weeks.
The United States demands that Iran agree to never acquire nuclear weapons and to open the strait immediately. Iranians demand an immediate end to hostilities on multiple fronts and an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.
Iranian state media said on Monday that Iranian negotiators would halt talks and close the strait. Later on Wednesday, Trump said Iran had agreed not to have nuclear weapons.
