If this meeting takes place, everything will change. Trump’s meeting with Kim during a trip to Asia watched by China, hosted by South Korea and with the entire region holding its breath could be either the diplomatic breakthrough of the decade or the most contentious summit in modern history. Either way, no one will be able to look away.

Trump’s Interest in Meeting with Kim Jong

Trump’s interest in potentially meeting Kim Jong Un was sparked during his summit with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the White House in August. During the meeting, Lee suggested that the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit could provide Trump with a chance to meet Kim, according to CNN.

APEC Summit Details

The APEC summit is scheduled to be held in Gyeongju, South Korea, on October 31 and November 1.

No Meeting Confirmation Yet

However, South Korea’s top envoy to the United States said on Friday that there is currently no confirmation of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during the summit.

Ambassador Kang’s Statements Regarding Speculation

Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha made the comments during a parliamentary review of South Korea’s delegation to the United Nations in New York, addressing ongoing speculation about possible Trump-Kim attendance at the APEC event.

“President Trump has expressed openness to dialogue, and North Korea has also shown some interest, but there is no indication yet that a meeting will be held at the APEC summit,” Kang said during a hearing of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee.

Possibility Still Open

Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha said that they are following the developments closely and are open to the possibility of a Trump-Kim meeting.

“We are following developments closely while keeping open the possibility of a Trump-Kim meeting,” he added, according to Yonha News Agency.
