Twelve shot after people in SUV open fire on US crowd
At least 12 people suffered gunshot wounds in a crowd on a street in Chicago when an SUV pulled over and two people inside began shooting, police said.
The SUV drove away from a South Side neighborhood and two people, both men, were in critical condition following the shooting late Friday, police said in a news release.
One person was injured by a bullet in his hip.
The eight men and four women in the group ranged in age from 17 to 47.
They were treated in four hospitals.
Another man suffered unknown injuries and refused medical treatment, police said.
Police initially responded to a call of a person shot and found a woman with two gunshot wounds to her back and a man with four graze wounds to his back.
Both were listed in fair condition.
Detectives were investigating.
Police say at least 21 people have been shot in the city since Friday evening, resulting in four deaths.
The attacks took place on Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States.
Earlier Friday, former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama welcomed the first visitors to the presidential headquarters on the South Side.
Pastor Donovan Price, a local advocate for gun crime victims, told CBS News it’s a tragedy to see such a mass shooting during the holiday.
“It should be a celebration,” he said.
“Fireworks should not turn into gunfire.”
