Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been notified and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is expected to become involved. An ICE detention unit is placed on each individual, which means immigration officers can eventually take them into custody, officials said.

The arrests were made with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, which helped track and capture the fugitives. Chapel Hill Police Department also participated in the operation.
Authorities claimed the incident was a serious crime, prompting detectives from the Major Crime and Forensic Services Units to respond to the scene.

Garcia-Lario was initially held without bail at the Franklin County Detention Center and was later transferred to the Pitt County Detention Center on Monday, where he remains in custody without bail.
Mayen was initially booked into the Orange County Detention Center and held without bail.
