Two Jewish men stabbed in terrorist incident: UK police

Two Jews were stabbed and injured on a street in London in what police described as an act of terrorism.

Police arrested a 45-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder in the attack.

The Metropolitan Police said two men, aged 34 and 76, were taken to hospital with stab wounds in the attack in the Golders Green area.

Counter-terrorism police are investigating whether the stabbings are linked to recent arson attacks on synagogues and other Jewish sites in the UK capital.

Politicians condemned the attack.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain.”

Security organization Shomrim said a suspect “was seen running along Golders Green Road with a knife in his hand and trying to stab Jewish members of the public.”

It was stated that the suspect was detained by Shomrim members and arrested by the police, who used a stun gun on him.

Security camera footage shows a man wearing a kippah, or traditional skullcap, near a bus stop when a passerby attacks him with a knife.

Police said the suspect also tried to stab the officers, but none of them were injured.

They are working to establish the suspect’s citizenship and background and Detective Chief Inspector Luke Williams said “investigators are considering all possible causes”.

Arson attacks in recent weeks have targeted Jewish settlements in London, including ambulances for a charity in Golders Green and a synagogue a few miles away.

“It’s happening in Israel but it’s happening on our doorstep, of course it’s shocking,” said Golders Green resident Moishe Grunfeld.

“I have children, I have grandchildren.”

The Jewish community in the UK is well-established, but its proportion of the population is quite small; They number approximately 300,000.

The north-west London suburb of Golders Green is one of the epicentres, home to kosher restaurants, Jewish schools and several dozen synagogues, as well as large Asian and Middle Eastern communities.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “There should be absolutely no place for antisemitism in society.”
