Two militants arrested in Manipur for ‘involvement’ in extortion activities

A police statement on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, stated that security forces arrested two militants belonging to banned organizations for their alleged involvement in extortion activities in Manipur.

A 22-year-old member of the banned Kuki National Front was arrested in the Nungkhal bridge area in Jiribam district on Monday. It was stated that a village-made gun with a magazine and six live bullets were seized from his possession.

A 38-year-old member of the outlawed People’s Liberation Army was also arrested on Monday in Bishnupur district for alleged extortion activities, the police statement said.

A person was also arrested for allegedly extorting money from vehicle owners at Tairenpokpi in Imphal West district on Tuesday, July 7.

Manipur DGP Mukesh Singh, during his visit to Noney district headquarters on Tuesday (July 7), had instructed police officers to remain proactive in stopping extortion activities in the state.

Mr. Singh also emphasized maintaining law and order, strengthening anti-extortion operations and ensuring prompt investigation and disposal of pending cases.
