Two Naxalites Gunned Down in Encounter
Bijapur: Two Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security personnel in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district in the early hours of Saturday, police said.
The gunfight broke out in a forest in the southern district of the district around 5 am when a team of the District Reserve Guards, a unit of the Chhattisgarh police, set out on an anti-Naxalite operation based on information about the presence of Maoist cadres in the area, an official said.
He said that the bodies of two Naxalites were recovered from the spot.
Intermittent clashes are still ongoing and more details are awaited, the official said.
As many as 285 Naxalites were shot dead in separate clashes with security forces in Chhattisgarh last year.
While 257 of them were eliminated in Bastar division, which consists of seven districts, including Bijapur, another 27 were shot dead in Gariaband district of Raipur division.
