Two suspected Ukrainian drones come down in Finland

Two drones believed to be Ukrainian crashed in southeastern Finland, Finnish media reported on Sunday.

Public broadcaster Yle reported that one drone crashed north of Kouvola and another crashed east of the city. No injuries or damage were reported.

“Drones have entered Finnish territory. We take this very seriously,” Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said, according to Yle.

The ministry reported that a number of objects were detected passing through Finnish airspace at low altitude. It was stated that fighter jets took action to detect them, but did not shoot them to prevent damage on the ground.

Yle said the air force identified the objects as Ukrainian drones, and Prime Minister Petteri Orpo later said they “probably” originated in Ukraine. Orpo described the incident as serious and said it was being investigated.

Kouvola is located approximately 70 kilometers from the border with Russia’s Leningrad region. Orpo said the drones may have been linked to overnight attacks on oil facilities in the region.

Ukrainian drones have repeatedly entered the airspace of Russia’s Baltic neighbors and occasionally landed on their territory.

Ukrainian forces attacked facilities in the Russian port of Ust-Luga on the Baltic Sea overnight, causing fires. Leningrad Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko confirmed the attacks and said Russian forces shot down 31 UAVs.

An air raid alert was issued in the Leningrad region on Sunday, and Drosdenko warned of a possible drone attack on Telegram. Internet speeds can be throttled, he said, which is one of several ways to fly drones.
