U.S. sent Iran 15-point plan to end war, report says

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States and Iran are “in negotiations right now,” suggesting Tehran is willing to strike a peace deal, although Iran has denied it is in direct talks with Washington.
Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said he had decided to back down on his latest threat to order attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure “based on the fact that we negotiated.”
“They’re talking to us and they’re talking sense,” Trump said when asked to elaborate on his opinion.
Later on Tuesday New York TimesThe United States has sent Iran a 15-point plan to end the war, he said, citing two unnamed officials.
It is unclear how widely the plan, transmitted via Pakistan, was distributed among Iranian officials, the Times reported. According to the newspaper, it is not clear whether Israel, which attacked Iran together with the USA, will also support the plan.
A day earlier, Trump told reporters that there were “close to 15” points of agreement between the United States and Iran. Preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is “No. 1, 2 and 3” on that list, he said.
Speaking in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump said multiple US officials were involved in the negotiations and that he had name-checked Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
He had previously said that US special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law and close adviser Jared Kushner held talks with their Iranian counterparts on Sunday evening.
Amid a clash of messages between the United States and Iran regarding negotiations, multiple outlets have reported that regional leaders are engaging in behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts to help end the war.
Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in his X post that his country is willing to facilitate talks between the two countries. Trump shared a screenshot of Sharif’s post on his official Truth Social account on Tuesday morning.
Asked if Trump’s post signaled he would accept Pakistan’s offer, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNBC: “These are sensitive diplomatic discussions and the United States will not negotiate through the news media.”
“As President Trump and his negotiators explore this newfound possibility of diplomacy, Operation Epic Rage continues unabated to achieve the military objectives set by the commander in chief and the Pentagon,” Leavitt said.
In remarks Tuesday afternoon, Trump repeated his claim that the United States had already won the war in Iran.
Trump said the main purpose of the war was to ensure that Iran does not have nuclear weapons. “We’re talking about it, and I don’t want to preface it, but they agreed that they would never have nuclear weapons. They agreed on that,” he said.
But the Trump administration has not backed down from plans to ask Congress to pass a major additional war-related funding bill that could reportedly total as much as $200 billion.
And early on Tuesday, Wall StreetJournal The Pentagon is preparing plans to deploy approximately 3,000 soldiers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, the Pentagon reported.
“Any announcements regarding troop deployments will come from the War Department. As we have said, President Trump always has all military options available,” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly told CNBC when asked about this report. he said.
