UAB officials issued a statement before the game on Saturday, confirming that two players were injured and a third was detained by police. The names of the students involved in the incident were not disclosed by university officials.

Court records obtained by The Associated Press identified the players stabbed as linebacker Joshua Underwood and JaSire Peterson, both of whom were stabbed. Underwood is a freshman from Fultondale, Alabama, and Peterson is a redshirt sophomore from Union City, New Jersey.

Speaking at a news conference Monday, UAB athletic director Mark Ingram said the decision to play Saturday came after careful consideration and discussions with players.

“We are aware of the seriousness of what happened on Saturday morning and very seriously considered not playing the game. It was not an easy decision, but only after we learned that the injured players were stable and our coach was able to have a very honest and compassionate conversation with our team did we feel comfortable with the game continuing – but only if the team wanted to play.”

Interim head coach Alex Mortensen also spoke to the media on Monday and said that both injured players have been released from the hospital.

“I’ve had the opportunity to sit down with our injured players and their families, and they don’t mind me telling you they’re out of the hospital and recovering. They appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers,” he said.

Mortensen noted that some players chose not to play in Saturday’s game. The team will finish the season Saturday against Tulsa, and Mortensen said he expects some players may opt out of playing again.

“This has been a very tough few days for a lot of players, and they have a tremendous amount of love for each other, that was very clear. I won’t go into too much detail about our time together and our meetings, but I really love this team and I love the group of guys we have.”
