UK could see fish and chips shortages as cod supply in ‘grave danger’

Scientists may be threatened by the country’s favorite fish and chips as they warn that they will have to catch much less in the British waters to protect the species.
The International Naval Discovery Council (ICES), a Danish -based independent organization, who advised the government to manage fish stocks, decided that none of the cod population in almost all waters of England should not be caught next year for the healing of species.
The organization said that fishermen should avoid fishing for Cod on the Cod, which has previously warned the British channel, Norwegian and the west of Scotland, which warned against her fisheries in Irish and Celtic seas.
Last year, fishermen should be allowed to capture 15,000 tons from these regions, while the only area in which ICS proposed that COD should be caught is in the waters around the Rockall island in the North Atlantic. Even there, the independent body warned that only 11 tons can be captured in a sustainable way – sufficient for approximately 55,000 fish supporters or enough for every 1,200 people in the UK Time.
“Northern shelf codes, three substhock (Northwest, South and Viking), which came together and come together,” he wrote. “ICES recommends that when the maximum sustainable return (MSY) approach and precautionary issues are applied, zero capture for all sub -hours in 2026.”
The ICES advises maximum captures to allow fish stocks to be hunted in a sustainable way, but fishing quotas are usually determined by the government on the levels established by scientists.
Oceana UK General Manager Hugo Tagholm said that science confirmed that COD is the “grave collapse danger, and that the aid organization was warned in 2023 fish stock.
“Our warnings on more than one risk of population have been ignored, and since then we had to watch desperately watching the British government while selling our sea and communities, and the largest industrial ships of fishing pressure allowed them to build brutally building small local boats.
“Coastal sources now depend on making the right choices and supporting fishermen throughout this process.
“If we continue to evacuate our seas, no one wins, the stocks follow COD and after collapsing, these populations can recover for decades.”
Protection Charity Blue Marine’s Senior British Marine Policy Manager Jonny Hughes said that scientific assessment of ICES showed that COD in the North Sea and the Celt Sea in the west of Scotland and Scotland joined the population in the Celtic Sea.
“The scientific assessments published today show that COD in the North Sea and the west of Scotland has collapsed into the population in the Irish Sea and Celtic Sea.”
He said that a fish stock should be in a state in a state to get a zero -capture advice, but after the whining in the Celtic Sea, it was the second stock to join the ına collapsed stocks ”.
“This is a direct result of short -term economic land priority decisions for a handful of wealthy fisheries for a long -term future of fishing communities in previous years and for the long -term future of fishing communities.
“This collapse could not be foreseen – in fact, predictable and inevitable.
“This is what happened when fishing managers and politicians play the Russian roulette with a completely loaded weapon,” he warned.
Mackerel also raises concerns about the advice at the end of the month, and asks countries to give scientific advice on this year’s negotiations to protect this year’s stocks.
A Defra spokesman said: “Britain, the EU and Norway, this international stock is important to cope with the challenges of the director.
“We are determined to rebuild it to sustainable levels and to maintain the long -term applicability of the British fleet.”
