Households in some parts of the UK are being asked to stock up on some essential items for emergencies after the Met Office issued a new warning about storms and rain. The forecaster has issued a yellow weather warning for storms and rain across much of England and Scotland on Tuesday.
The warning starts at 14.00 and continues until 18.00, while in Scotland it will be valid from 12.00 to 18.00. The Met Office has recommended checking if your property is at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit. If you’re driving, give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions or bus and train schedules and changing your travel plans if necessary.
The Met Office said: “People cope better with power cuts when they are prepared in advance. This is easy to do – consider packing flashlights, batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.
“Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: the Met Office recommends keeping the weather forecast for your area up to date whenever a warning is issued.”
The Met also said that following rain, which may be heavy at times, overnight and this morning, showers are expected to begin this afternoon and are likely to move slowly. A few places could see 20 mm per hour, and one place could see 30-40 mm in 2-3 hours. This may lead to some localized flooding and travel disruption across central Scotland.
The heaviest showers may be accompanied by thunder, but the showers will gradually taper off in the evening hours.
