UK seaside town set for major £1.1m boost ahead of the summer | UK | News
A UK seaside town is expecting a huge increase ahead of the summer months. It will benefit from a new £1.1 million attraction as part of a wider investment project.
Cliftonville in Kent has been called the “cool” area of Margate, with many popular record stores and cafes. Further benefits are planned with the addition of a £1.1 million skate park designed by Betabong Limited. The new attraction will be built on disused land by the sea and will offer skateboarders stunning views of the coastline.
As reported by time outThe acre of land was previously home to a crazy golf course but will now be used as a skate park. Thanet District Council approved the plans, which also include a kiosk and toilets.
Thanet District Council Place Director Bob Porter said: “As someone who is passionate about creating spaces where our young people can thrive, make connections and be active, I know how valuable this will be for the Margate community.
“This isn’t just about rails and ramps. This is about building a space where people of all ages can come together, strengthen relationships, gain skills and take pride in their local area. I can’t wait to see the designs and hear what our residents think.”
The new addition is part of the wider Margate Town Deal worth £22.2 million. The investment project was approved in 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2027.
£750,000 of the skate park’s £1.1 million cost came from the deal, with a further £175,000 added during the council meeting. As well as the skate park, the Margate Town Deal also envisages money will be spent on improving Walpole Bay and reopening Margate Theater Royal and Margate Winter Gardens.
Darren Nobbs, director of Betabong, said: “As a team of lifelong skaters, we are delighted to be building the new park on the site of the former DIY skate park and working closely with the strong local scene. “Once built, the new concrete skate park will be one of the best in the UK, boasting a beautiful location overlooking the beach.
“The concept design includes a variety of street and transit-oriented elements across a large area to offer something for everyone.”
