Britain could be on the brink of a record-breaking June heatwave as the Met Office warns that the hottest June temperature on record in the UK is expected to fall this week.

The current June record is 35.6 degrees, set in 1976. However, forecasters say that this may be exceeded in the coming days and the record for the highest minimum temperature in June may be broken.

In a post on social media, the Met Office said it now expects the highest minimum temperature for June (also set in 1976) to be 22.7C.

However, he warned that the heat will be even more uncomfortable as humidity levels are also expected to be high.

The map below shows live temperatures across the UK:

“High temperatures only tell part of the story because of how uncomfortable high humidity will become, both day and night,” the forecaster added.

The Met Office said temperatures could reach a maximum of 39C on Thursday, most likely somewhere in London or the South East, with even higher values ”possible”.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “The Met Office is marking 39C as the headline maximum temperature on Thursday, most likely for London or somewhere in the South East.

“Estimated temperature values are indicative and are subject to a slight range on either side.

“If final values are at the upper end of our narrow range, it is possible we could see temperatures above 39 degrees.

“It’s important to remember that temperature readings are only one element of this extreme heatwave story.

“The other important factor is high humidity, which will make it more difficult for many people to withstand intense heat.”

The warning comes after England’s highest recorded temperature reached 34.6C in Wisley, Surrey, on Tuesday, according to the Met Office.

But Tuesday’s peak failed to beat the June record of 35.6C set in Hampshire in 1976 and also fell short of the hottest day of the year, 35.1C, at London’s Kew Gardens on May 26.
