According to new weather data, snowfall may follow heavy rains across the country. WXCharts.com’s weather forecast shows snow could fall across northern Scotland and northern England on Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
It comes after the Met Office issued an amber warning for rain across much of south Wales on Monday. A Met Office spokesman said: “Rain will fall across eastern parts of England on Saturday, with a yellow warning in effect throughout the day. In northern parts of England, wet surfaces overnight will bring the possibility of ice formation and a yellow warning will be issued from tonight until Sunday morning.”
They added: “The transition to wet weather will begin on Sunday night and into Monday, with rain being the key hazard in the forecast.”
The Met Office forecast for Saturday evening said: “Rain is clearing in the North Sea with strong winds in the east, particularly along the coast.
“Elsewhere there are clear periods of drier conditions, leading to widespread frost and some icing.”
Weather data from WXCharts.com shows significant snow accumulation across Scotland.
While snow depth in the northwest of the country may reach up to 4 cm, Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow are also expected to be affected.
Meanwhile, in the UK, up to 1cm of rain per hour may fall in parts of Northumberland, Yorkshire and Lancashire, bringing the danger of travel disruption.
The snow will likely ease on Sunday and be replaced by an increase in precipitation ahead of Monday’s Amber alert.
The Met Office’s forecast for Sunday said: “Drier, brighter and cooler on Sunday, with winds easing in the east and showers mostly in the north and west.”
“Clouds are increasing in Northern Ireland and it is raining in the evening.”
Met Office deputy chief forecaster Mike Silverstone said: “Heavy rain will fall over south Wales from late Sunday into Monday. Although rainfall amounts will vary, the largest accumulations are expected to be on the highest ground in south Wales and could reach 100-120mm throughout the day.”
“60-80mm is likely for most peaks in the amber warning zone, with lower levels expected to see around 20-40mm throughout the day.
“Wider yellow warnings for rain have been issued for the south-west and north-west of England, as well as central and northern Wales; these areas may also experience disruption throughout the day.
“This is an evolving forecast, so it is important to follow Met Office warnings in the coming days.”
