US President Donald Trump issued a clear and simple warning to Israel, saying the US would lose “all support” if it prefaced Israel with annexing the West Bank, after White House officials harshly criticized the proposed Knesset vote on the issue and said it was contrary to Trump’s Gaza peace plan.

Trump has repeatedly said that Israel will not annex the West Bank. He assured Arab countries that the United States would withdraw its support if Israel attempted annexation, he said in an interview published Thursday by Time magazine, based on an Oct. 15 conversation. Trump said, “This will not happen because I promised the Arab countries. And you cannot do this now. We have great support from the Arabs. This will not happen because I promised the Arab countries. It will not happen. If this happens, Israel will lose all the support it received from the United States.”

In the interview, Trump also said he got Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop the war in Gaza, which would continue for “years.” He also stated that he believes Israel and Saudi Arabia will improve relations by the end of the year. The United States has repeatedly warned that any singular annexation of the West Bank would cross the “red line.” He had already rejected annexation last month, saying: “I do not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. Enough has happened. It’s time to stop.”

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said on Thursday that the Knesset’s vote on the annexation of the West Bank was a “deliberate political provocation” by the opposition to “create discord” during US Vice President J.D. Vance’s visit to Israel. The statement noted that “the two bills were sponsored by opposition members of the Knesset.”

Speaking to reporters at Tel Aviv airport before leaving Israel, US Vice President J.D. Vance called the Knesset vote “a very stupid political stunt” and said he took it as a personal insult. “The policy of the Trump administration is that the West Bank should not be annexed by Israel,” he said.
