Judge Anthropic case preliminary OK to $1.5B settlement with authors

On Thursday, a Federal Judge approved an offer of anthropic to pay a $ 1.5 billion to pay a classroom case with a group of writers, what would be the largest copyright reported in the history of the public.
The trial, the US court of California’s Northern Region, was brought by the writers Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber and Kirk Wallace Johnson. The library claimed that he had been downloaded anthropically illegally from pirate databases such as Genesis and Pirate Library Mirror.
The authors said on Thursday, “We are grateful to the current action of the court, which is one step further approaching us a real accountability for anthropic, and that all AI companies will not shorten the law or that they cannot invalidate the rights of the creators.” He said.

US regional judge William Alsup initially expressed some reservations about the proposal of Anthropic, including concerns about how the authors would be informed correctly. Alsup approved the agreement after “a few weeks of meticulous evaluation and examination” according to a version.
Alsup said he would take into account the final approval of the agreement after the notification and demand processes are completed.
Aparna Sridhar, anthropic Deputy General Advisor, said in a statement that the company is satisfied with the determination and that the settlement “solved narrow claims about how certain materials are obtained”.
