UK’s Starmer outlines growth mission after budget tax rises

MANCHESTER, England, Nov 30 (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will unveil the Labor government’s economic vision for the remainder of the parliamentary term on Monday in a speech based on last week’s budget, his office said.

Downing Street said finance minister Rachel Reeves would present the “wider mission” of her government’s drive to boost economic growth, following last week’s budget that raised 26 billion pounds ($34.41 billion) in taxes.

Starmer’s centre-left Labor Party is lagging behind right-wing Reform UK in opinion polls. The next national elections are scheduled for mid-2029 at the latest.

Despite winning a historic landslide election last year, Starmer is under pressure from his own MPs to regain the initiative after a difficult first year marked by U-turns on key policies and ongoing concerns about the public finances.

His office said Starmer would talk about removing “unnecessary regulations”.

“Rooting out excess costs in every corner of the economy is a key step in lowering the cost of living for good and fostering more dynamic markets for business,” Starmer will say, according to excerpts from his speech released by Downing Street.

His speech will also focus on helping more people get into work by increasing access to apprenticeships and training, and removing barriers to employment for people who have been “erased” due to neurodivergence, disability or mental health issues.
