Umar Khalid granted interim bail in Delhi riots larger conspiracy case to attend sister’s wedding

A Delhi court on Thursday granted interim bail to former JNU student leader Umar Khalid in the larger conspiracy case in the Delhi riots, allowing him to remain in police custody from December 16 to 29 to attend his sister’s wedding.
Earlier, the Delhi Police, which had strongly opposed the bail pleas of activists Umar, Sharjeel and others on December 10, had said that the February 2020 riots were nothing spontaneous but an “orchestrated, pre-planned and well-conceived” attack on India’s sovereignty.

Umar, Sharjeel and other accused have been investigated under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) 1967 anti-terrorism law and erstwhile IPC provisions for allegedly being the “masterminds” of the 2020 riots that left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.
The violence broke out during widespread protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The accused moved the top court challenging the Delhi high court’s September 2 order denying them bail in the “larger conspiracy” case related to the February 2020 riots.
