University of Sydney the only uni to miss out on extra allocation
“Regional universities play a vital role in local communities and economies and we are supporting them with more places.”
However, the largest number of students will still be directed to the largest urban universities. The University of Sydney will have the largest allocation of international students next year (11,900), followed by Monash University (11,300), the University of Melbourne (10,500) and the University of NSW (10,350).
In their applications to increase international student numbers, universities had to show that they were meeting the government’s priorities for building new housing, building relationships with Southeast Asia and diversifying overseas student markets.
The aim of this is to meet society’s expectations for increased housing supply and to prevent universities from becoming dependent on a single overseas market. For example, most Group of Eight universities, including Sydney, have a significant focus on students from China.
The government said in a statement that allocations were increasing for universities that can prove they are building new accommodation, adding that there are currently 11,000 beds under construction, 15,000 beds with development approvals and 12,000 beds in the planning process.

“The University of Sydney is the only institution currently unable to achieve growth pending further discussions on realistic plans for market diversification, genuine commitment to Southeast Asian engagement and evidence of appropriate investment in new housing,” it said in a statement.
Hill said Australians expect the increase in student numbers to be supported by new housing investments. “[This is] “What do the government’s policies now encourage, especially for large institutions?”
While 32 universities, including Sydney, wanted student numbers to be increased, five did not ask for changes.
