Marty Supreme impresses with a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score; even so, Timothée Chalamet’s best-rated film is from 8 years ago

Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet in a fictionalized version of ping-pong legend Marty Reisman, has received a wave of praise after its review embargo was lifted on Monday, weeks before its Dec. 25 release. Directed by Josh Safdie, the film follows Marty Mauser (Chalamet), “a young man with a dream that no one respects,” who fights his way to greatness. The cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma (Tyler, The Creator), Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher.

Marty Supreme’s cover is great but not the best

On Rotten Tomatoes, Marty Supreme opened with a staggering 96% score across 54 critic reviews, writing it as one of Chalamet’s best-reviewed projects to date. Although it falls slightly short of her highest-rated film of 2017, Lady Bird, at 99%, it currently stands as her best-reviewed lead performance, surpassing her previous solo roles.

What are critics saying about Marty Supreme?

Early reviews heavily emphasize Chalamet’s screen presence and Safdie’s frenetic directorial style.

  • Variety’s Peter Debruge calls it a “defining performance” [Chalamet’s] still a thriving career,” noting that the actor has made audiences believe in this “instantly iconic character.”
  • IndieWire’s David Ehrlich praises the star’s physicality and intensity, writing that Chalamet “makes one of the 21st century’s most monumental movie performances look as natural as a tourniquet.”
  • David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter calls the film “a miracle” and describes it as a kinetic portrait of a life in constant motion.

However, the reactions are not in the same direction.

  • The Wrap’s William Bibbiani, the only lead reviewer to give a negative score so far, deems the film “a superficial self-celebration of American exuberance at the expense of everyone and everything around us.”

As critics rally around Chalamet’s high-energy, transformative turn Marty Supreme is already emerging as a serious awards season contender, especially in the acting categories. If the Rotten Tomatoes score holds up after extensive reviews, it could solidify the film as one of the standout comedy-dramas of the year.
