“I feel like being an athlete for my country, as well as being able to represent my country, brings a different meaning and a different quality to me. I think there are very few people who do both at the same time, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to represent both. I’m grateful to be an airman and represent my country from that perspective,” Jones told Fox News Digital.
“It definitely ties them together and brings a different meaning and how much more I have to give.”
Jones narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. So he enlisted in the Air Force in April 2023, which allowed him to go through a much more rigorous training routine and he believes he has the skills to qualify for this year’s games.
“I’m grateful to be an airman,” he said. “Participating in the WCAT program, which allowed me to really get my off-season training, helped me get to this point… having that off-season training to really be able to focus and get to work came out of this moment.”
Jones welcomed her daughter in 2021 and was looking for stability as a way to achieve her goal of reaching the Olympics. The Air Force gave him that path.

“I wanted to do something that would give me more stability, there was a period where I was trying to train while working my civilian job and it wasn’t enough. I know I want to dedicate my time to bobsled,” Jones said.
“The biggest thing I’ve learned is to be tough and I think that plays a part too, you start basic training and you get up early, you follow orders, you get the discipline that goes into bobsled… so going from basic training and having that discipline means knowing exactly what I need to do.”
Jones’ recognition for representing the United States came at a time when other American Olympians were openly criticizing their country in Italy. USA team athletes Hunter Hess, Amber Glenn and Mikaela Shiffrin made statements criticizing the USA’s situation while competing in Italy.
But Jones now joins ice hockey player Brady Tkachuk in publicly praising the United States and expressing his honor and gratitude for representing him at Milan Cortina.

Jones said he hasn’t looked at social media lately, so he wasn’t aware of any criticism of his country from his Team USA teammates.
