Ukraine’s allies meet amid doubts over guarantees

Approximately 30 Western leaders are negotiating with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy about security guarantees for Kiev in case of peace agreement with Russia and hopes to do enough to convince the US to support their efforts.
Both personally and with the video connection, the “willing coalition” summit brings together leaders, including the largest countries in Europe, as well as Australia, Canada and Japan.
The coalition members, who did not contain the USA, talked for months to identify their possible military support for Ukraine.
However, these efforts stopped because governments said that any European military role would need their own US security guarantees as “return”.
President Donald Trump did not make a clear commitment to achieve them.
Special Ambassador Steve Witkoff met with Senior diplomats in French, British, German, Italian and Ukraine before the summit before the opening session was attended for a short time.
According to a person who knows the subject, Zelenskiy is expected to hold one -to -one meeting with Witkoff.
French President Emmanuel Macron said that on Wednesday, Zelenskiy in Paris and the coalition leaders would approve plans for security guarantees prepared by their soldiers.
“Our Europeans are ready to provide security guarantees to Ukraine when there is a signed peace.” He said.
Two European officials said the goal would be to send a political signal to Trump.
This has been hosting Putin in August, Trump, since Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskiy will emphasize the lack of progress towards the direct peace talks and now produce Trump to press Moscow.
On Wednesday, Trump, who launched the red carpet in Alaska, accused Putin of conspiracy with China and North Korea, after organizing a unity demonstration in Beijing in a generous memory of the end of the World War II on Wednesday.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in a statement on Wednesday that the meeting will guarantee what the meeting can provide with Washington, he expects that he would open the way for more intense discussions.
Putin told Kiev on Wednesday that he had a chance to end the war in Ukraine “if common sense reigns” negotiations, and said that he preferred it even though he was ready to finish it if it was the only way.
Western officials say that the key element of guarantees will receive strong support for the Ukraine Armed Forces.
However, although Russia was absolutely opposed to any foreign deployment in Ukraine, it was expected to contain an international power to help and guarantee Kiev both in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
Diplomats say that there are great differences between the allies.
A German government said that Berlin would be difficult to reject politically, but it would be difficult militaryly difficult for Lithuania.
Rutte from NATO said Russia’s views were insignificant.
“Why Russia thinks about the troops in Ukraine is a dominant country. Russia has nothing to do with it,” Thursday, a conference in Prague on Thursday. He said.
“I think we should stop doing Putin too strong.”
European leaders have made clear that such a power would only be possible with our support – something Trump promises generally in August.
However, Washington has not yet announced that he was willing to contribute.
The French Presidency said that some leaders would call Trump after the summit.
