Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australia should take US President Donald Trump at his word that he wants the conflict in Iran to end.
“President Trump has said he wants the conflict to end, you have to take it at face value, but also because of the consequences for the US economy,” Albanese told ABC Melbourne.
“President Trump has a clear reaction to the shooting down of the Apache helicopter by Iranian fire. We want to see a lasting peace emerge in the region because it obviously has a humanitarian impact on the region, but it affects the entire world.”
When asked if Trump’s plan in Iran was clear to him, Albanese said the president outlined two clear goals.
“One is to stop Iran’s access to a nuclear weapon, which is something we obviously support, given the nature of the regime. The second is to end the conflict, and I think that’s in the interest of people in the United States but all around the world,” he said.
“What we need to do is to make sure that this actually happens. As you know, we have made some statements. I wake up in the morning and I get information that says the Strait of Hormuz is opened, a few hours later it is closed, then it is opened, then it is closed.”
