On Friday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accused India of challenging the provisions of the Treaty by raising the issue of staying away from the Indus Water Treaty. However, the Pakistani leader did not mention Islamabad’s efforts to stop terrorism from the house, which talked about the decision to reach an agreement on cross -border terrorism that India has made after the expensive terrorist attack. “The unilateral and illegal initiative to keep India’s Indus Water Treaty in ABEYANCE is challenging the provisions of the treaty and the norms of international law. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Şerif continued to raise the Kashmir issue in the debate. “I want to guarantee that I am standing with them to the people of Kashmir, Pakistan stands with them and one day the persecution of India in Kashmir will stop.” He said. India accepted the treaty as one of the measures against Pakistan’s efforts against cross -border terrorism efforts after 26 civilians were killed in the expensive terrorist attack on April 22 this year.
What is the Indus Waters Treaty?
The Indus Waters Treaty was signed by the World Bank between India and Pakistan in September 1960. He allocated control over the three Eastern rivers – Ravi, Beas and Sutlej – waters and three Western River – Indus, Jhelum and Chenab – to Pakistan. Despite the wars and tensions between the two countries, the agreement remained in force. However, it has been criticized as unfair to the share of the country from the water rights of the country in India. India accused Pakistan of labeling Pakistan as a “desperate initiative” to mislead the treaty process from supporting terrorism and to avoid the accountability. India used its sovereignty in order to place the treaty in ABEYANCE, according to international law and associated its former situation with Pakistan’s support for cross -border terrorism.
