US troop killed during Iranian drone operation in Iraq: CENTCOM

A US military member was killed on Saturday during an operation involving explosive remnants of an Iranian drone shot down in northern Iraq, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Sunday.

Officials said a second US soldier was also injured in the incident.

The announcement comes after CENTCOM confirmed Sunday that unidentified remains were found during the search for a U.S. service member reported missing in Jordan following another attack by Iran on Friday.

The incident in Iraq occurred after US forces recovered a downed Iranian drone and began handling the explosive material left behind, according to officials.

“A US soldier in northern Iraq was killed during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from an Iran-downed unidirectional attack drone on July 18,” CENTCOM wrote in a post on channel X.

The military did not immediately release further details about the incident but said the other soldier injured in the operation was receiving medical treatment.

Officials in Jordan said that the unidentified remains seized on Sunday will also be examined to determine their identities.

“After an extensive search, U.S. military personnel located unidentified remains at the site earlier today,” CENTCOM said. he said. “The examination process to confirm the remains is ongoing.”

CENTCOM had previously said that two US soldiers were killed in Iran’s attack on a US base in Jordan on Friday.

All four American soldiers were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan, officials said. They have since been discharged.

“CENTCOM withholds additional information, including the identities of missing and fallen combatants, out of respect for families during the reporting process,” the agency said.
