USA Today columnist says United States has already ‘lost’ the World Cup because of politics, Donald Trump

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially underway, with Canada, the United States and Mexico co-hosting the tournament featuring 48 teams.

As of Thursday afternoon, only one match had been completed, with the Mexican National Team defeating South Africa 2-0 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. With 103 matches left to complete, the World Cup will make its way to spectacular venues across the country.

However, if you ask left-wing sports media columnists, the result is already clear. And the loser of the tournament was the USA. Certainly.

USA Today Columnist Nancy Armor this week published one of the most ridiculous assessments of the World Cup and the country’s success in hosting the tournament. Arguing that no matter how well the U.S. Men’s National Team does in the event, we reveal ourselves to be a “hateful and greedy nation.”

“The U.S. men’s national team could make historically deep progress and the tournament could be filled with great goals and intriguing play,” he writes. “This will not change the fact that we present ourselves as a hateful and greedy nation, where leaders are only willing to meet the world as they want to see it, not as it is, and where the love of the game is exploited for high dollars.”

Instead of representing ourselves well, he says, we chose to be “ugly Americans.”

“This will be the legacy and shame of the World Cup. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase the best of the United States and embrace the joy that football brings to the rest of the world, and instead we chose to be ugly Americans.”

What makes Americans “ugly”? Of course Donald Trump!

Armor claimed that the treatment of the Iranian National Team despite playing in the tournament was “shameful” and defended Somali referee Omar Artan, who was prevented from entering the country due to his alleged ties to terrorist organizations. These are “suspicious causes,” he says. The United States, he adds, “needs to host the World Cup, not be its bouncer.”

“We’re working very closely to make sure the right people are coming to our country,” President Trump said with anger on Wednesday. God bless.

The other fatal flaw he uncovered? Ticket prices. As the host nation, the US government has literally nothing to do with the ticket prices set by FIFA. Many complained that the extremely high price points would crowd out fans who couldn’t afford to pay them. This is a very reasonable and understandable complaint. But again, that’s up to FIFA, not the host country.

This is the problem with Armor’s entire article. It is not based on facts; based on emotion and obvious hatred and disapproval of the country and its leadership. Would they have similar complaints if the Biden administration kept someone with ties to terrorism out of the country? Of course not. But it was clear that the Biden administration never even pretended to care about the integrity of America’s borders.

We cannot help but mention that the previous tournament in 2022 was hosted by Qatar, where migrant workers were exploited during stadium construction. To its credit, Armor has criticized the Qatari government for its human rights record and other policies, but comparing the United States to Qatar as a host is absurd at best and offensively inaccurate at worst.

He approvingly quotes New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who, as an open borders extremist, is naturally critical of the Trump administration. This gives the game away. Regardless of the Iranian National Team and a referee with allegedly dodgy connections, Armor would write something similar. Because he doesn’t like Donald Trump.

The USA will be a great World Cup host, much to Armor’s chagrin. Don’t expect him to admit it later, this requires intellectual honesty.
