UP announces new district to honor Kalyan Singh

The Government of Uttar Pradesh has announced the establishment of a new district to honor former CM Kalyan Singh. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that UP’s 76th district will be named Kalyan Singh Nagar. However, the proposal has not been presented to the parliament yet, but the announcement is likely to be made soon as the CM has announced himself. According to Adityanath, the new district will be created by reallocating areas in Aligarh and Bulandshahr. This area was the birthplace and workplace of former Prime Minister Kalyan Singh, making it an apt name for the area.

According to official sources, the new district is likely to include Atrauli and Gangiri tehsils of Aligarh and Dibai of Bulandshahr. This came after former MP and Kalyan Singh’s son Rajveer Singh offered to recognize his father’s life work for the progress and administration of the state. For this, he urged Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to take the initiative.

As of now, India has 797 districts across 28 states and 8 union territories. After India gained independence in 1947, there were approximately 230 districts, comprising territories that were part of the 17 states of British India and many princely states. At that time, Uttar Pradesh was called United Provinces and had only 35-38 districts. It was later renamed as Uttar Pradesh.

The initiative was welcomed by state leaders, who said it was the most fitting honor deserved by the former CM, whose rise from a minor leader in Atrauli to one of the most influential leaders of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh was inspiring.
