Vance leasing part of multimillion-dollar Virginia farm as an additional residence
Vice President J.D. Vance is renting part of a multimillion-dollar property in rural Virginia as an additional residence for his family, two people familiar with the matter told CNN.
The new rental residence is part of the historic Wolver Hill Farm, which spans nearly 500 acres on the outskirts of Middleburg, Virginia, an affluent enclave located just over an hour’s drive from Washington, D.C.
Wolver Hill Farm is owned by a firm run by Charles Kuhn, the founder of a moving company that has shuttled many presidents to and from the White House, including President Donald Trump. The company is also a long-time government contractor.
Kuhn has become one of Virginia’s largest landowners in recent years and also a major player in the development of data centers across the state. In a deal last November, Kuhn’s company reportedly sold nearly 100 acres to a data center investor for $615 million.
Vance leases some of the Middleburg property from Kuhn’s firm primarily for his wife and three children; This is described by acquaintances as an effort to provide them with a greater sense of normalcy away from Washington’s scrutiny. The vice president is expected to stay there occasionally, but he and his family maintain their official residence at the Naval Observatory.
Vance’s personal attorney, Chris Ashby, said in a statement that the vice president plans to pay market value for the property.
“The rent will be at fair market value as determined by rents for similar properties in the area,” Ashby said. he said.
Kuhn did not respond to a request for comment. The Washington Business Journal first reported that the vice president had leased part of Kuhn’s Wolver Hill Farm.
Vance is the latest major political figure to set up sanctuary near the small but affluent town of Middleburg, population less than 1,000. Former President John F. Kennedy once owned an estate in the area; Former President Ronald Reagan rented a house in the area to serve as a base of operations during his 1980 presidential campaign.
