Vandalia Police report body found, man in custody after teen went missing

VANDALIA, Illinois – The Vandalia Police Department is no longer searching for a teenager reported missing.

Police were searching for a 13-year-old girl after she was last seen Thursday night.

The ministry announced Friday that a body was found and a suspect was detained.

Police have not yet confirmed to FOX 2 that the deceased was 13 years old. The department removed a social media post requesting assistance in locating the missing teenager and referred further investigation to the Illinois State Police (ISP), the agency handling the investigation.

The ISP did not respond to a request for further information on Friday. In addition to ISP, Vandalia Police said charities include the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County Coroner’s Office, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, St. Elmo Police Department, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Federal Bureau of Investigation were also involved.
