Vat Savriti Vrat Katha
Goddess Parvati once asked Lord Shankar, “O Lord of Lords, please tell me the sacred story of Savitri, the beloved of Brahma, who resided in the sacred precinct of Prabhas. Tell me the significance of her fast, the history behind it and how her devotion blessed women with good luck and prosperity.”
Lord Shankar replied, “O Goddess, I will tell you the remarkable story of Savitri, revered in the region of Prabhas. In a sacred place known as Savitri-Sthal, Princess Savitri observed the noble Vat Savitri Vrat.”
Long ago, a noble and compassionate king named Ashvapati ruled in the kingdom of Madra. Despite her virtues, she remained childless for many years. Following the advice of learned sages and astrologers, he performed a grand yajna, seeking the blessings of a child. As a result of the sacred ritual he was blessed with a daughter of extraordinary beauty and grace whom he named Savitri. Everyone who saw him believed that he was a divine blessing.
One day, after worshiping Goddess Savitri, the young princess stood next to her father, shining brightly like Goddess Lakshmi herself. Seeing that his daughter had come of age, King Ashvapati consulted his ministers and said to Savitri: “My daughter, the time has come for you to get married. But no suitable groom worthy of your virtues has been found. Therefore, you must choose a worthy husband for yourself. Go with your royal ministers, visit the holy hermitages and kingdoms, and choose wisely.”
Following her father’s orders, Savitri wandered through forests, pilgrimage sites and ashrams in the company of old priests and sages. After meeting revered saints and visiting holy places, he finally returned to the palace.
There he found Sage Narada sitting with his father. After greeting him respectfully, Savitri explained the purpose of her journey. She said, “In the kingdom of Shalva lives an honest king named Dyumatsena. Although he was once powerful, he lost his sight and his kingdom was taken over by enemies. Now he lives in the forest with his wife and son Satyavan. Satyavan is honest, virtuous, noble and affectionate. I have chosen him as my husband.”
Hearing this, Sage Narada became worried and said to King Ashvapati: “O King, although Satyavan is of noble qualities, he has only one serious flaw; his life is short. He is destined to die exactly one year from today.”
But Savitri remained determined. She replied, “A king promises only once, a wise man speaks only once, and a girl is married only once. Whether Satyavan’s life is long or short, I have accepted him as my husband and will never choose anyone else.”
Seeing her unwavering determination, Narada advised the king to go ahead with the marriage. Soon Savitri and Satyavan got married at an auspicious time and Savitri started living in the forest with her husband and father-in-law.
Although she was happy in her married life, Narada’s prophecy remained in her thoughts constantly. As the foretold day approached, Savitri went on a strict fast for three days without food or water. On the last day, after bathing and praying to the gods and ancestors, she sought the blessings of her mother-in-law and accompanied Satyavan towards the forest.
While Satyavan was chopping wood in the forest, he suddenly complained of severe pain in his head. Savitri gently placed her head on his lap so that she could rest. At that moment, he saw a dark-skinned, majestic figure in front of him, wearing yellow clothes, radiating light like the sun.
Savitri folded her hands and asked respectfully: “Who are you?”
The figure replied, “I am Yama, the god of death. Your husband’s life has ended, and I have personally come to claim his soul.”
Yama then removed Satyavan’s soul from his body and started walking towards Yamlok. But Savitri followed him fearlessly. Yama turned to him and said: “No mortal can walk this path before the time written in his destiny.”
Savitri replied with calm devotion, “Wherever my husband goes, there goes my way. A woman’s rightful place is with her husband. Since you have taken her away, I cannot go back.”
Deeply impressed by her devotion, wisdom and unwavering love, Yama was extremely pleased with Savitri.

Vat Savitri 2026: Puja Rituals
Women wake up early in the morning and take a sacred bath before starting the rituals.
They wear traditional clothes, especially elegant saris, and adorn themselves with jewellery.
Devotees prepare sattvic food for bhog and collect puja items such as flowers, haldi, kumkum, a kalash filled with water and kaccha isi (sacred raw white thread).
They then visit a temple or a place where Vat Vriksha (banyan tree) stands, light a diya with desi ghee and pray for their husband’s long life, health and prosperity.
Women circumambulate the banyan tree seven times, tying it with a sacred white rope.
After the rituals, prayers are said and the good wishes of the family elders are received.
