Venezuela’s top lawmaker says more than 400 people have been released from prison; This contradicts claims by rights groups that only between 60 and 70 prisoners have been released in recent days amid calls for the release of those imprisoned for political reasons.

National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodríguez made the announcement during the parliamentary session on Tuesday.

“The decision was made to release some prisoners, not political prisoners, but some politicians who broke the law and violated the Constitution and called for occupation,” Rodriguez said in his speech to parliament.

He said more than 400 prisoners had been released but did not give a specific timeline.
