‘Very dangerous’: Storm warning as 5cm hail batters western Sydney suburb
A “very dangerous storm” warning was issued after 5 cm hail fell in a suburb in western Sydney.
The potential for dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding, damaging winds and rain that could lead to large hailstones has been flagged across Sydney on Saturday night.
5cm hail was recorded in Penrith around 4pm on Saturday due to inclement weather, and wind gusts of 91 kilometers per hour were recently recorded at Western Sydney Airport.
The NSW State Emergency Service has urged people in Katoomba, Yass, Penrith, Lithgow, Jenolan Caves and Springwood to stay indoors.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that the Metropolitan, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Hunter, Illawarra and South West Slopes areas, including Katoomba, Yass, Penrith, Lithgow, Jenolan Caves and Springwood, may be affected by the weather.
Local people were urged to stay away from streams and drains, and not to walk, cycle or walk over flood waters.
Heavy rain, flash floods, hail and damaging winds are also possible in parts of the Central Highlands and Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra, Southern Highlands, North West Hills and Plains, Central West Hills and Plains, South West Hills and Riverina Regions, including Goulburn, Dubbo, Mudgee, Katoomba, Yass and Parkes.
Flood warnings have been issued along the Thomson River, Cooper Creek, Barcoo River, Lower Balonne and Bokhara Rivers and the Little Balonne River.
