Will bring Tatas to Bengal but land at Singur no longer belongs to govt., says Bengal CM

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday, June 12, 2026, said that the government will bring the Tata Group back to the State. However, he added that the land in Singur, where Tata Motors has set up an automobile factory, no longer belongs to the state government and has been returned to the farmers.

The Prime Minister said, “Farmers in Singur cannot grow crops because the concrete brought for the factory mixes with the soil.” Tata Motors’ withdrawal from Singur in 2008 is considered a setback for the industrial aspirations of the people of West Bengal. After a protracted legal battle, the land acquired by the Left Front government in Singur was returned to West Bengal farmers by Mamata Banerjee during the Trinamool regime.

Speaking to media at an event to mark 12 years of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre, Mr. Adhikari said his government was serious about attracting investments in the State, but added that the Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal would not hold “photo sessions” in the name of industrialisation.

“We want to see if these things happen.” [industrialists] “It is good to invest in the State, whether there are allegations of tax evasion, land fraud or money laundering against them, whether they buy land or do not make any investment and want to meet to retain the land,” the Chief Minister said, adding that his government will be careful about business groups investing in West Bengal.

Mr. Adhikari said land acquisition will not be a problem and acquiring land by force like the Left Front government or pushing industries out of the State like the Trinamool Congress government is not the solution.

The Prime Minister stated that the allocation of land to the Border Security Force for fencing of nearly 100 km of the West Bengal-Bangladesh border was a major achievement of his first month as the Chief Minister. He added that the people are willing to give up land for industrialization and that a road map for industrialization will be reflected in the Budget to be presented to Parliament later this month.

Commenting on the Bengal Global Business Summit, Mr. Adhikari said that an event management firm was paid ₹635 crore to conduct various editions of the business summit. “I have the list. The previous Trinamool government paid ₹635 crore to an event management company in the name of organizing the Bengal Global Business Summit. There will be an investigation. Not only will we conduct an investigation, we will also file a case,” he said.

Zero tolerance for hooliganism

Addressing many issues at the press conference, the Prime Minister said that the government follows a “zero tolerance” policy against unrest, hooliganism and anti-social activities.

“After coming to power, there were some incidents and we dealt with them decisively and gave a clear message that there will be zero tolerance for such unrest, hooliganism and anti-social activities. We will not allow such incidents to continue,” he said.

Drawing attention to the violent incidents that took place in Asansol and Park Circus, the Prime Minister said that such incidents were not repeated after the intense intervention of the police.

Defends the driver against attack

Mr Adhikari also defended the ongoing anti-encroachment campaigns against hawkers on the streets and railway stations of Kolkata.

“People have the right to walk on the footpaths. Nobody has the right to occupy these roads. No one gave me the right to hand over the wide roads and footpaths of Kolkata to anyone. I am responsible to the people,” he said.

Highlighting the congestion in areas like New Market, Rajabazar and Metiabruz in Kolkata, the Chief Minister argued that uncontrolled encroachment has become a governance issue rather than just a livelihood issue.

“The government will act in a humane manner and the possibilities of rehabilitation of unused state lands will be explored. However, encroachments will have to be eliminated first,” the Prime Minister said.
