While the home team remains winless at home in the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs earned a much-needed 115-11 win in Game 3 at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

New York still leads the series 2-1, but the Spurs close out the game thanks to stellar defense, timely shooting and forcing the Knicks to go 2-of-12 from three-point territory in the fourth quarter. As a result, the Knicks’ 13-game playoff winning streak ended.

Victor Wembanyama, who had a chance to win the second game but missed his last shot, led Spurs by finishing the game with 32 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

But to aid the winning effort, Wembanyama’s teammates De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle were making clutch baskets.

The Spurs came out with a clear determination to set the tone on the road, and that’s what all basketball fans should have expected given where the series stands. Wembanyama scored 9 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while Castle scored a perfect 7 points on 3-of-3 shooting to close San Antonio’s 11-point lead in the first quarter.

But if there’s one thing we’ve learned about the Knicks, it’s that they’ll come back no matter the deficit. And before the end of the period, the same situation was repeated.

New York began to find its rhythm, using the sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden to its advantage. They closed the half with a seven-point lead, 64-57, and OG Anunoby scored 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including two three-pointers and five free throws.

Jalen Brunson also scored 15 points, while Josh Hart, who was left open on purpose by Spurs, scored 13 points with his three-pointer.

The Knicks had all the momentum heading into the second half, but the Spurs started this game in a similar manner. They forced and capitalized on turnovers, erasing a seven-point deficit almost immediately.

While both teams were chasing each other, San Antonio entered the fourth quarter with a one-point lead and it was certain that this match would be a tough match in the “Mecca”.

This time, however, the Spurs were finally able to preserve their lead going into the fourth quarter, as the Knicks quickly got into foul trouble, allowing San Antonio to take the bonus immediately. Wembanyama took advantage of these as the Knicks started the quarter on a cold note.

San Antonio took the lead as many as eight in the fourth quarter with 4:50 left in the game after Wembanyama hit two more free throws, which led to some key defensive plays for the Spurs. The epitome of this was when the Knicks tried to move the ball across the arc for a three-point shot. But the Spurs continued to close out and Wembanyama deflected a layup attempt by Landry Shamet.

Spurs’ first basket came from Castle with 1:53 left in the fourth quarter. San Antonio had just a four-point lead and Wembanyama passed the ball with just seconds left on the shot clock. The Knicks had a good fight against Castle and he scored three points from the wing, increasing the lead back to seven at a time when the Knicks were gaining momentum.

Then, after Brunson hit the Knicks’ first 3-pointer of the quarter to cut the lead to three, Fox drained a 15-foot putback that looked like a dagger with 12.2 minutes left in the game.

Anunoby, who finished the game with 28 points on 9/12 shooting, cut the score to two with 9.4 points after the break and kept the Knicks’ hopes alive with his own three-pointer. But Castle buried both free throws in a much-needed situation to close the door on New York.

In the end, Castle finished the game with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists on 8/14 shooting, while the Spurs’ starters also finished the game with double-digit points. Dylan Harper, who had great minutes on the bench for San Antonio, also scored 13 points on 18 field goal attempts.

One stat that stands out for the Knicks is that Shamet is 1/8 from the field, including 1/7 from three-point range, which he accomplished throughout the playoffs.

The Spurs pulled off the win with President Donald Trump in attendance. He lived in a suite with Knicks owner James Dolan. The president’s presence led to increased security around the arena throughout the afternoon and evening.

Game 4 of the NBA Finals will start at 20.30 on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.
