The brother of Southport killer Axel Rudakubana has revealed the moment two years before the horrific murders of three teenage girls that left him fearful his brother might go on to kill someone. Dion Rudakubana, the brother of the teenager convicted of attacks at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class last summer, told an inquest he was worried Axel “could do something potentially fatal” to a family member.
Advocate member Richard Boyle shared a message Dion sent to a friend in 2022 that alluded to the violent temper of her brother, who was sentenced to at least 52 years in prison for the murders of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice da Silva Aguiar. In the text, Dion, who was visiting his home from university, suggested there was a risk that Axel “could do something that could be fatal.” “Fights are scary because of the danger of someone dying,” he wrote.
Dion told the inquest that at that point in 2022, she believed Axel was trying to stab her father, although she couldn’t be sure.
Mr Boyle asked: “Did you have a serious fear at this time that your brother was going to kill a member of your family?”
Dion replied: “If things come to that.”
He added that he was often away from the family home while studying at university and did not consider reporting his concerns to the police “as things were slowly escalating”.
“There was no cause for concern in going and reporting it,” he explained.
Dion, who was two years older than his incarcerated brother, also told the inquest that Axel’s capacity for empathy had diminished over time.
In the statement, he said that the 19-year-old reminded him of a character in the movie No Country for Old Men.
“Yeah, I think I was told that this character was supposed to be a sociopath, and that’s why I used that word there,” he said.
The 21-year-old actor added that he last saw his brother in the summer of 2023 and that he “threw a bottle” at him but narrowly escaped by closing the door.
