Powerful, fearless, new Assam to emerge after polls: Congress’ Gaurav Gogoi after casting vote
Speaking to reporters after exercising his franchise along with his mother Dolly Gogoi in Jorhat, he said the new government in the state will protect the democratic rights and freedom of expression of all people.
“Today is an important day for Assam. People will play a decisive role for the future of Assam,” the Congress leader said.
“Once the results are declared, a strong, fearless, self-confident and new Assam will emerge. It will protect people’s democratic rights and freedom of expression.”

Earlier in the day, he appealed to all voters in the state to vote in large numbers and exercise their Constitutional rights to secure their future.
Voting for all 126 constituencies in the Assam assembly began at 7 am to decide the electoral fate of 722 candidates. In high-stakes elections, the ruling BJP is aiming for a third consecutive term, while the Congress is looking to seize power after being ousted in 2016.
In a post on Facebook, Gogoi said that this is an important day for the entire people of Assam and everyone should come out to exercise their Constitutional rights.
“Today, it is very important that we vote with our conscience to build a new Assam, to secure our present and our future. My best wishes to everyone who comes out to vote for the first time. Jai Aai Assam,” Gogoi wrote in Assamese.
The Congress deputy speaker in the Lok Sabha is contesting from Jorhat constituency in Upper Assam.
