Violent serial DV offender cuts off ankle monitor, sparks police manhunt
A serial domestic violence offender who was controversially granted bail after pleading guilty to a brutal attack on a Perth woman cut off his ankle monitor and went on the run, prompting a police manhunt.
Guy Leslie Cramp, 33, was arrested and charged over the vile attack on the mother of his newborn son at his Stratton property earlier this year.
Victim Chloe Wright released CCTV footage of the attack, which left Cramp with a broken nose and broken cheekbone, to raise awareness of how perpetrators of domestic violence are treated by the courts after he was released on bail despite pleading guilty to assault.
Cramp became the target of a statewide manhunt after cutting off his ankle monitoring equipment on Friday evening, weeks after he failed to complete the DV offenders program that was part of his bail conditions.
WAtoday He knows the ankle monitor was found in dense woodland near the RAAF air base at Bullsbrook, where Cramp lived.
Wright said he was contacted by police in the rural WA town he fled to after being released on bail, just hours after cutting off his ankle monitor.
Wright campaigned for tougher sentences for perpetrators of domestic violence after she was released on bail after it was revealed she was Cramp’s third female victim. Cramp also has a record of violating bail and other assaults.
His release also sparked harsh criticism from the state opposition, with Libby Mettam criticizing the criminal justice system.
“This is a government that talks tough when it comes to perpetrators of domestic and family violence, but the reality on the ground is a soft approach,” Mettam said.
“Frankly, our criminal justice system is broken. The current system, the current system is broken. It prioritizes the freedom of perpetrators over the safety of victims.
“It’s breathtakingly bad. It’s so shocking and I don’t think there’s a single person in the community who can believe what’s going on here, and it’s absolutely inexcusable for the attorney general to try to play it off like that.”
He caught the cramp on Saturday and will be back in action on Sunday morning.
