Tensions rose in Kolkata on Tuesday evening, May 5, 2026, as bulldozers demolished several structures in the city’s iconic New Market. Similar visuals were seen in Murshidabad’s Jiaganj, where a Lenin statue was destroyed by the mob. Trinamool Congress leaders alleged targeted attack by Bharatiya Janta Party workers.
“In the heart of Kolkata, near New Market. With police permission. A bulldozer was brought in to demolish meat shops as part of the victory celebrations. CAPF is standing around. BJP is FOR YOU,” said TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien on his social media account. He shared a video of a bulldozer taking over structures outside New Market.
