House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries struck a defiant tone Wednesday morning after Democrats won in Virginia in a partisan gerrymandering battle leading up to November’s midterm elections.
“House Democrats will continue to fight one fight after another on behalf of the American people,” Jeffries, DY, said at a news conference at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington. Paul Thomas Anderson’s Oscar winner for Best Picture.
“Last night was a great victory for the people of Virginia. It was a great victory for America. It was a great victory for democracy. [President] “Donald Trump and the Republicans started this stupid war, and we, as Democrats, have made it clear that we will finish it,” Jeffries continued. “We will not allow Donald Trump to rig the midterm elections.”
The redistricting referendum in Virginia passed by three percentage points, giving Democrats four seats in the U.S. House this year. The measure allows for temporary adoption of new district boundaries but would return redistricting control to an independent commission in 2031.
The Trump administration has argued that the ballot initiative is not a clear-cut win for Democrats.
“This is a state that moves into first place by 15 points in November 2025. Democrat for governor and about eight points attorney general“This was a three-point race last night. This is actually a three-point overperformance,” White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Trump political advisor James Blair said during an appearance on CNN’s “Domestic Politics with Dana Bash” on Wednesday. Trump’s historic performance in 2024 In Virginia.”
“As a basis for all Democrats applauding this morning, if Republicans, on average, perform anywhere close to how they did in Virginia last night, we’re not just adding seats to the Senate, we’re adding seats to the House of Representatives and we’re going to have a historic midterm,” Blair said.
Winning could help Democrats take US House of Representatives
But the Virginia results will likely be a boon for the Democratic Party, which is favored to regain the House majority this November. This also effectively eliminates the lead Republicans gained as a result of their own redistricting efforts.
“Virginia voters have spoken and tonight they approved a stopgap measure against a President who claims he is ‘entitled’ to more Republican seats in Congress,” Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat who campaigned in support of the resolution, said in a statement after the results were announced late Tuesday. “Virginians watched other states comply with these demands without voter input, and we refused to allow it. We responded the right way: at the ballot box.
Democrats have historically opposed partisan gerrymandering, but have taken an aggressive approach to the issue after Trump and Republicans launched their own redistricting effort for fear of losing control of the House of Representatives in the next Congress.
Trump last summer He began calling out Texas Republicans to carry out redistricting in the middle of the decade. States typically redraw House district lines after a national census every 10 years.
Texas becomes first state to reimpose restrictions for 2026
The GOP-led Texas legislature heeded the president’s warning and adopted the maps. net Republicans up to five seats. Republican legislatures other states — including Ohio, North Carolina and Missouri — followed suit. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called a special session The GOP-led state legislature is expected to redraw congressional districts later this month.
In response, Democrats in some states appealed to voters to change the maps under their control. Californians voted in favor in November a ballot initiative We aim to give Democrats five more seats in the House of Representatives this fall.
Trump, a Truth Social post on WednesdayHe called the Virginia vote a “rigged election” and claimed the referendum’s language was confusingly worded. “As everyone knows, I am an incredibly intelligent person and I had no idea what they were talking about in the Referendum, and neither did they!” Trump published it.
Advocates of the Virginia effort have framed it as a necessary evil to combat the anti-democratic impulses of the Trump administration, but it puts Democrats in an awkward position after taking a decidedly anti-partisan, anti-rhino approach in recent years.
Democrats oppose gerrymandering
Democrats have repeatedly introduced legislation aimed at preventing partisan gerrymandering by requiring independent committees to redraw congressional districts. Democrats in 2021 For the Law of People, It included anti-gerrymandering provisions, a top legislative priority.
In his speech Wednesday, Jeffries sought to highlight the differences between Democrats’ and Republicans’ approaches to the redistricting issue.
The Democratic leader said the party decided to respond to Republican redistricting “in a way that is consistent with our values.”
“Our response has been strong and temporary in direct response to the actions of MAGA extremists, and has always been voter-approved,” Jeffries said. he said. “That’s the big difference between how we approach this effort and Republicans who go into state legislatures in the dead of the night, hand out maps, and then are afraid to present those maps to the people in those states.”
