A 20-year-old mother who tried to hire a hitman to kill her three-year-old child has been spared a prison sentence. Jazmin Paez posted a request on a satirical website asking if her son will be killed in 2023.

Paez, of Miami, Florida, potentially faced up to 40 years in prison after admitting solicitation of first-degree murder, unlawful use of a communications device and tampering or fabricating physical evidence. The incident caused a stir in the United States three years ago and sparked an important debate about mental health, criminal justice and child protection.

This comes after Paez, who has reportedly been diagnosed with schizophrenia, admitted to submitting requests to a website called Rentahitman. Notias Caracol reported that this situation, which was initially perceived as a joke, was forwarded to the authorities due to the accuracy of the information provided.

The website, which ostensibly offers a real shooter service, is actually a parody. However, its owner claims that the device has turned into a reliable tool for detecting actual attempts to commit murder.

This is because the owner will forward anything he suspects to be a credible request to law enforcement. Paez submitted his request, stating photos of the child and exactly where he could be found.

The situation prompted website owner Robert Innis to notify authorities. “Looking up names and addresses and verifying that the target person lives at a particular address sounds like a red flag to me. If that information is verified, it’s something that needs to be investigated, and that’s why I referred him,” he told NBC6 Miami in an interview.

Paez was arrested in July 2023 following information Robert gave to the police. He appeared in court last week, CourtTV reported.

Although he confessed to the crimes, prosecutors offered him a plea deal that would have avoided an immediate prison sentence. Instead he received a suspended sentence; This means he will avoid being registered as a criminal if he complies with the set conditions.

He will be required to complete two years of community service, serve 12 years of probation and undergo mandatory behavioral therapy “until it is deemed no longer necessary.” He is also prohibited from contacting the child until 2040.

The court was informed that Paez had already lost his parental rights to the child. It was stated that the diagnosis of schizophrenia was taken into consideration in the legal process.

Assistant State’s Attorney Ayana Duncan described Paez as “unequipped” for parenting and announced that he began another relationship with a teenager in 2023. But the relationship ended when he announced he had a child, leaving her “devastated”.

He suggested that this “could have been the catalyst or impetus to even try to carry out this conspiracy.” He also stated that “it was essentially ‘If you want me back, get rid of the kid.'”
