Wimbledon 2026: Arthur Fery illuminates Centre Court as extraordinary run continues

Fery became the fifth Briton to reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon since the Open era began in 1968.

Only four men have reached the Grand Slam men’s semifinals via wildcard; Fery joins Jimmy Connors (1991 US Open), Henri Leconte (1992 French Open) and Goran Ivanisevic (2001 Wimbledon).

Of these three, only Ivanisevic managed to win the championship.

Fery, who had never been in the top 100 before this tournament, will now rise to 36th in the world rankings. This guarantees him a direct berth in the sport’s biggest tournaments in the near future.

The £900,000 check, which will increase further if he beats French Open champion Zverev, will be another financial boost to further develop his career.

“I don’t see the results as a monetary value, but rather as the result of the hard work that has been put in over the years,” Fery told BBC Sport after reaching the Australian Open main draw in January.

He talked about being able to “reinvest” in his tennis in Melbourne, but in reality money was never an objective.

Fery’s coach, Jeroen Benard, describes him as “a normal 23-year-old kid who is very good at sports”, while his long-time friend, English player Felix Gill, says Fery is “the goofy one” in their circle of friends.

“Every morning when he gets treatment, we watch World Cup highlights and talk about everyday things,” Benard said.
