Walkers announces it is ditching much-loved crisp brand Tomato Snaps

Walkers has announced it is the end of the road for its much-loved crisp brand Tomato Snaps.

The final batches of the spicy tomato-flavored chips will be available from wholesalers, in-store and online stores in the next few weeks.

Shaped like a folded rectangle and packaged in a distinctive bright red packet, the crisps were produced at Walkers’ factory in Newark Road, Lincoln.

PepsiCo, owners of Walkers, told the BBC: “Smith’s Tomato Snaps has been a great performer and will always hold a special place in our history, but developing our portfolio allows us to focus on producing more of the brands and flavors people love.”

A PepsiCo spokesperson thanked fans for their support over the years, adding that they knew “Snaps fans will be sad to see them go.”

Earlier this year Walkers added two new flavors to its crisp range: Sticky Teriyaki and Masala Chicken.

While the packaging claims that the Sticky Teriyaki flavor is “inspired by the flavors of Japan,” the Masala Chicken takes its inspiration from India.

The new releases of the Walkers core range mark the first time in decades that brand new flavors have made the cut.

Classic flavors Ready Salted, Cheese and Onion, and Salt and Vinegar were first introduced in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Other classics such as Shrimp Cocktail, Fried Chicken, and Smoky Bacon appeared later, in the 1970s.

Since then, Walkers has largely focused on limited-edition flavor campaigns, with few moving into permanent ranges.
