Three orcas appear thousands of miles away from home, stunning scientists
In Puget Sound, Seattle, a newly arrived pod of orcas surprised researchers and delighted whale watchers.
Orcas have been spotted several times in waters near the city’s downtown; viewers lucky enough to catch a glimpse of them were thrilled.
As Associated Press detailedResearchers are keeping detailed records of killer whales visiting the Salish Sea between Washington state and Canada, identifying their fins and grayish markings on their sides.
This flock of three, believed to consist of an adult female and her two cubs, has been seen elsewhere; It originated in Vancouver, British Columbia. The sighting stunned experts, as there were no previous records of local whales.
Shari Tarantino of the Washington-based Orca Conservancy said researchers found photos of the capsule in Alaskan waters in 2025. Circular tracks left by cookie-cutter sharks on whales indicate they spend time in the open ocean where sharks live.
“We don’t yet know their exact origin with 100% certainty, but given their appearance and the fact that some Alaskan populations are widely distributed in the North Pacific, the leading hypothesis is that they are from Alaska, possibly the Aleutian region,” Tarantino wrote in an email to the AP.
These were designated T419, T420 and T421, with the “T” standing for “temporary”.
Sightings of orcas in unexpected places are becoming more common, as are sightings of other ocean animals. No matter how exciting this situation is for animal lovers, the conditions are not that bad. As oceans warm and food becomes harder to find, marine wildlife are moving to new areas in search of valuable resources.
Although the pod showed no signs of distress, it may have enjoyed some Seattle seafood. Tarantino said the pod feeds on harbor seals, sea lions and dolphins in the Salish Sea.
“They quickly became crowd favorites,” Tarantino said in his email. “People spend a lifetime hoping to see a killer whale from shore, and these three did more than expected.”
“People are all very happy to see it,” said photographer Hongming Zheng, who traveled 10 hours to examine the capsule. “It was epic.”
